'Treasure Trove' by Lena Gustafson
"This book is an archive of Lena Gustafson’s collected images: photos, sketchbook entries, and paintings in progress collected mostly between 2020-2023. Gustafson taught swimming to all ages and levels for over 15 years, stopping abruptly when the pools closed down in the early pandemic months of 2020. Around this time, Gustafson began compiling images and thoughts into clear sheet protectors gathered in three-ring binders.
Through the personal practice of collecting images and archiving patterns, Gustafson attempts to transfer the close attention of swimming instruction into a way of observing everyday life. The binder helps bring observations back to mind and generate new ideas for future projects. In this book, images are sorted into chapters by theme: Pools, Flowers, Heartbreak, Nervous System, and Sequence. Although the images are grouped on aesthetic and thematic grounds, each image importantly recalls a particular time, place, and feeling—a memory."
